Wisden reveals his 10 best cricket images of 2021

An image of Jos Buttler leaping over Steve Smith in England’s crushing eight-wicket victory over eventual world champions Australia in last year’s T20 World Cup received the Wisden Photographer of the Year 2021 award.

The photo of Buttler jumping high above the head of a cowering Smith was taken by Australia’s David Gray during his winning runs of 71 on 32 balls in their group stage clash in Dubai on October 30 2021.

The contest attracted over 300 entrants from around the world, with judges from Wisden saying Gray’s photo “perfectly captured the athleticism, excitement and pace of T20 cricket”.

He is the second consecutive Australian to win the award after former Test and ODI captain Steve Waugh in 2020 for his image of children playing cricket amongst the sand dunes near Osian, India.

Gray is also the fifth Australian winner of the Wisden Photograph of the Year competition in 12 years since its inception and follows Scott Barbour (2010), Robert Cianflone (2015), Phil Hillyard (2018) and Waugh.

An image of four players from Wooler Cricket Club in Northumberland searching for a stray ball in a silage field was one of two finalists, alongside a photo of Birmingham Phoenix Men’s Finn Allen dropping a taken during the inaugural Hundred competition.

Seven other images from around the world have been shortlisted, including a stunning photograph of Jasprit Bumrah warming up in the sunset before a T20 World Cup match, with the 10 winning images to be displayed at The Oval in London for 12 months and featured in the 2022 edition of Wisden Cricketers Almanac.
