Big Season 2 footage reveals Catherine’s tumultuous rise to power

Hulu is finally making a return to royal intrigue with its second season of Great, and new images have been revealed from the second season of the historic parody, featuring Elle Fanning and Nicolas hoult. Loosely based on the actual reign of Catherine II of Russia – better known as Catherine the Great – the series reaches new heights with its second season, complicating the series’ already intense political intrigue by placing Catherine (Fanning) in a glittering dress of precious stones and gold at the head of the country of Russia.

While Season 1 focused on Catherine rallying her supporters and securing the power to overthrow her husband, Season 2 is expected to cover (loosely) Catherine’s rise to power as Empress of Russia, after staging a coup. ‘State to oust Peter III (Hoult) from his seat. as emperor and change Russia for the better. The new footage shows Peter visibly upset by the prospect – about the idea that his wife has more power than him – as well as a Catherine looking just the opposite, confronting her oppressors with General Velementov (Douglas hodge) and Count Orlo (Sacha Dhawan), guns blazing and smiling at the dinner table, looking happy but maybe slightly off balance.

The new footage also shows Catherine, along with her friends and foes, grappling with a host of new issues, including her pregnancy, as well as how to deal with the turmoil of the court following her coup. Despite the actual success of Catherine’s reign as Empress, things might not turn out so well for her in Hulu’s rendering of events, with a brand new image depicting the young Empress holding a bloody head and severed in a bag, staring into the distance and looking visibly disturbed.
